Why is hydroxyapatite better than fluoride?
Despite its effectiveness in mineralising teeth and fighting tooth decay, fluoride in toothpaste imposes a risk of dental and skeletal fluorosis in young children if toothpaste is frequently ingested during toothbrushing (Monogr Oral Sci. 2011, 22, 81-96).
Hydroxyapatite is a safer alternative to fluoride. Hydroxyapatite is a form of calcium crystal that makes up to 97% of your tooth enamel and nearly 70% of the dentin of your teeth (Open Dent. J. 2018, 12, 406). The teeth directly absorb hydroxyapatite and fill the enamel fissures caused by demineralisation.
Both fluoride and hydroxyapatite remineralize the teeth and are comparable in effectiveness and they both have antibacterial properties– you’re not losing out on anything by switching.
